Benefits of Atopiclair: Clinical studies
Atopiclair is designed to Calm, Restore and Protect the skin of a person with eczema. it contains individual ingredients that contribute to each of these functions.
Clinical studies in adults and children over the age of six months have compared Atopiclair with a 'vehicle' cream (an emollient that does not contain the key ingredients of Atopiclair). These studies showed that Atopiclair offered a significant improvement in the following elements of the patients' eczema:
"EASI" (the eczema area and severity index). This is a scoring system that clinicians use to give an objective measurement of how severe and how extensive a patient's eczema is. The measurement takes into account a variety of clinical signs, including the redness, the amount of skin affected and any excoriation (breaking of the skin). In adults, this score had improved by 66% after 22 days, compared with a 3% improvement in patients using the vehicle cream (p<0.0001). In children/infants, after 22 days the group receiving Atopiclair had shown an average improvement of 5 points on the EASI scale, compared to a slight deterioration in the vehicle group. (p<0.0001).
Itch (pruritus). Relief of itch is a key treatment objective in eczema. In these studies the patients' itch was measured on a visual scale of 0-100mm, where 0=no itch and 100=maximum possible itch. In adults, patients using Atopiclair started the study with an average score of 70, and finished the study with an average score of 12. patients using the vehicle cream started at an average score of 70 and finished with an average score of 50. Atopiclair was therefore significantly better at relieving the itch than the vehicle cream (p<0.001). In children/infants, patients using Atopiclair also demonstrated a significant improvement in itch compared to those using vehicle, with a 75% reduction in itch from baseline after 22 days (p<0.0001).
Need to use rescue medication (steroids). Studies measured the proportion of patients who needed 'rescue medication' to address a flare in their eczema. Atopiclair was shown to significantly reduce the need for rescue medication in adults and in children/infants (p<0.001, p<0.005 respectively). In adults, 95% of Atopiclair patients did not need steroids during the 50 day study, compared to 60% patients using vehicle. in children/infants, 91% Atopiclair patients did not need steroids during the 43 day study, compared to 71% of patients using vehicle.
Safety. The level of adverse events reported in studies has been low. There have been no serious adverse events linked with Atopiclair. The most common events occurring in the studies are listed here - these events are not necessarily linked to using Atopiclair/vehicle. In adults, the most common events reported in the study were cold (5.5% patients using Atopiclair vs 6.8% using vehicle), influenza (2.8% vs 4.1%) and rash (2.1% vs 5.5%). In children/infants the most common events were burning (6.9% Atopiclair vs 7.1% vehicle), fever (6.9% Atopiclair vs 7.1% vehicle), upper respiratory tract infection (5.6% vs 8.6%), stinging (8.3% VS 2.8%) and common cold (2.8% vs 7.1%).
